Baseball's Pennant Races: A Graphic View
Published in Hardcover by First Impressions Pub Co (June, 1981)
Author: John Warner Davenport
Average review score:

'Graphic View' is pennant race student's dream
John Warner Davenport's 1981 book "Baseball's Pennant Races: A Graphic View" presents a series of graphs showing every American and National League pennant race from 1901-1980. When you think of the nature of pennant races, from wild season-long battles between two or more teams to runaways by one dominant team, chances are the way these graphs look is the way you'd see those races in your mind.

For all of the marquee races during this span -- the 1908 chases in both leagues; the 1920 American League battle between the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees; the 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers-New York Giants tussle; the Philadelphia Phillies' 1964 collapse that created a heated four-team struggle; and others, Davenport gives us "close-up" graphs, that chronicle each day's scores over a period of one or more months. These closeups really give an insight into what was actually happening to these teams day by day, and in some cases, what effect teams outside the race were having on the final result.

In the regular, more broad-based graphs, we get a glimpse at interesting also-rans who were either on the rise -- like the Philadelphia Athletics of 1926-28, right before their domination of the American League over the following three seasons -- or on the way down. These are indicated by bolder lines in Davenport's graphs (as are the teams who won the race).

Perhaps the ideal combination would be this book's graphs and the pure numbers available in Neft and Cohen's "The Sports Encyclopedia: Baseball." Having both books separately is good enough, however.

While on one level it's unfortunate that this book hasn't been updated, either by Davenport or someone else, for some people an update would only be valuable through 1993, in any case. After '93, the Wild Card was introduced, devaluing the pennant race for many observers. Of course, the real purists might point to 1968 as the last year of true pennant races (though neither was particularly close), coming on the eve of divisional play in 1969.

"Baseball's Pennant Races: A Graphic View" is a fine addition to any baseball fan's collection, its lack of updating notwithstanding.

Very Nice
Well im playing bass for 4 years now, and as being so i really recomend this book. This is definetly not for beginners, but more for advandced bass players. Wooten explains some cool stuff for those who want to play funky stuff and Bailey is the living Pastoruius. The songs are really cool and even cooler, you got the notes to them and the coolest they explain what they actually do both on the cd and the book. Go ahead.

Bearkiller the Life of a Boy On the Amer

You'll never believe it's all true
This book is the true story of a young boy growing up on the frontier. His father is perpetually moving the family farther west, always following the frontier. Little Bearkiller is always getting into trouble (think little rascals, only often times more dangerous). Somehow Bearkiller manages to survive all the little stories that make up the book.
This book was particularly special to me because Bearkiller is one of my ancestors.

Beginner's Spanish: Latin American (Hippocrene Beginner's Series)
Published in Paperback by Hippocrene Books (April, 2001)
Author: Ila Warner
Average review score:

A Great Book, especially if you allready know a little!
First of all if you've tried to study spanish before and have gone through a couple of books that claim to be "complete" courses in "beginning" spanish only to be discouraged by the monotony and huge amounts of vocab and grammar you are supposed to just memorize this may be the perfect breakout book for you.

The book itself covers grammar and verb forms up to the subjunctive case which I think is a good thing because when you finish the book you will have enough grammar and vocab to feel really good about what you've learned and enough to read a magazine or book or newspaper with a dictionary, which I believe is the best way to develop your vocabulary becuase you learn what you need to learn and therefore it's practical and interesting.

At the end of each section ( there are 10) there are interesting notes about different Latin American countries, proverbs, and word studies, and idioms. Finally I would say that the vocabulary and grammar you will learn is just about perfect for a beginner and if you truly learn it all and supplement it with a great grammar like "Spanish Verbs and Essentials of Grammar" (especially for the subjuctive case), which will cost you like 7 bucks, and a dictionary like NTC's "English and Spanish Learner's Dictionary" (note just because it's for learner's doesnt mean it's only good for beginning vocabulary) you will likely be more competant than most college students with 4 semesters ( 2 years) of study. And it will get you there without being mundane or overwhelming.

Being a Boy

Author: Charles Dudley Warner
Average review score:

One of the greatest books ever written
This book is a wonderful read; simple yet complex at the same time. It is an indepth look at exactly what it's like growing up as a young man, full of first experiances. His views of society are insightful yet subtle as they are interjected periodically in the middle of a story. I could'nt help but feel a strong connection with the author. It's like his experiances back then are the same we face today. A delightful book, and a must read for any young man. Get a hold of this book any way you can!

The Best Wedding Ever
Published in Paperback by Career Press (May, 1996)
Author: Diane Warner
Average review score:

This book is wonderful and practical for wedding planning.
This book is great if you have planned much of your wedding and just need to double check some things, or need advice if you're confused over anything. The question and answer format of the book makes it very easy to read because it's easy skip over the questions you already know the answers to. It is also very practical and includes many ways to cut back on costs.

The only thing the book didn't mention is to double check the dates with everyone, especially the officiant, so there are no mix-ups. It is also somewhat localized, many of the examples come from the Northwest. However she does try to give general price ranges from around the country.

It was one of the best biographies I have read.

The birth of a reformation gives an insightful view of the founding of a major Reformation Movment. It shows us the trials and tribulations of early church of God ministers as they traveled about teaching the truth of the word of God. I would recommend this book as excellent reading to anyone.

Building a Print Collection: A Guide to Buying Original Prints and Photographs
Published in Paperback by Van Nostrand Reinhold (July, 1981)
Author: Glen Warner
Average review score:

An Excellent Primer on Prints
This book, although 20 years old, is an excellent introduction to collecting prints. It explains the different print processes, what to look for in an etching, etc. It also discusses why some Picasso prints are worth triple a nearly identical one. Very good basic information (if you can find it).

If you are interested in etchings, drypoints, engravings, woodcuts, etc. this is a good book. Other books cover offset lithography in more depth.

Well written basic info, I enjoyed it.
